Masjid Umar

A new build Mosque located on Evington Road, Leicester on a key arterial route, Masjid Umar offers a blend of traditional Islamic features and contemporary detailing. The main entrance leads into a double height space with a feature staircase and the main prayer space located at first floor. At ground floor level, a series of classroom spaces can be opened out to form a larger community space when required. Masjid Umar has won several accolades, including Peoples Choice Project of the Year and a shortlisting in the ACE/RIBA Awards for Religious Building Of the Year.

Special Features: Designed to be a landmark building, the building features a series of minarets and a main dome above the prayer hall, and high quality external materials.
Challenges faced: Redevelopment of a very tight site in a residential area to form a community facility
Outcome Achieved: Contemporary religious facility which reflects traditional Islamic features
