Midlands Co-operative Society appointed KPW Architects to provide a new enlarged and improved retail food store in the heart of Kibworth Beauchamp. Located in a Conservation area in a popular South Leicestershire village, the development was on the site of a former smallholding and the current store, which had to be kept trading at all times during the development. Detailed discussion with the Local Authority resulted in a traditionally detailed premises to reflect the local vernacular and harmonise with the existing street scene.

Value: £2.2m.
Special features: The appearance in the street scene was a key issue, so use was made of traditional materials, and gable features reflecting the local vernacular.
Challenges faced: To reduce impact the building was dug into the site and storm water attenuation with syphonic drainage installed.
Outcome achieved: A well presented retail outlet with car parking, in a conservation area. The development was designed to have minimal impact on the street scene.
