Described as ‘A model of Modern Conservation’, this £1.1M regeneration project of a former care home, once an Arts and Crafts influenced family home built in the 1920’s, brought a disused premises back into use. Located within Stoneygate Conservation Area, the vacant property had been unsympathetically altered in the 1970’s, and KPW were charged with the task of creating a neurological care facility to current standards within the property. Extensive use of natural light, high quality materials and contemporary internal features have provided a therapeutic rather than institutional premises, whilst externally attention to detail is apparent throughout.

Project summary: To redevelop an existing building, including the demolition and removal of 1970’s extensions, and to upgrade the facilities in line with current required criteria/standards.
Value: £1.1m.
Special features: Extensive use of natural light throughout the redevelopment, with large glazed atrium link and curved feature staircase.
Challenges faced: Use of quality traditional materials to external finish, with contemporary internal features and glazed atrium link to original building.
Outcome achieved: The resolution of stringent conservation requirements, resulting in the restoration of the original building and its place in this highly visible street scene.
