A £10m design and build scheme involving Leicester-based KPW Architects, one of the East Midlands leading architectural practices, has won a prestigious ProCon award.Madani High School, on Evington Valley Road, was awarded the 'Sustainable Development of the Year Award' at the ProCon awards dinner, which was attended by over 600 Midlands-based property and construction professionals. KPW was retained as contractor's architect for this design and build scheme, which involved the regeneration of a former factory site into a new school complex including prayer halls, sports facilities, outdoor play area and on site car parking.
The Sustainable Development of the Year Award recognises the most environmentally sustainable projects within the City and Madani High School, which incorporates a wood-fired biomass boiler, natural ventilation and passive controls, serves as an excellent example of these criteria. In addition, the scheme achieved a BREEAM rating of 'Very Good' for its low energy features. A Green Travel Plan was also created for the school and its pupils, Islamic children aged between 12 and 16, to encourage them to use public transport, walk or cycle to school.
Gareth Share, director, KPW Architects said: "We are absolutely delighted the scheme has been recognised in the ProCon Awards. Madani High School is one of the first non-Christian, Government funded faith schools in the country, so for it to receive this accolade as well just makes it all the more exceptional. Achieving this award is testament to the hard work and effort of all those involved and is a fine example of a sustainable new building which is highly functional and aesthetically pleasing."
KPW worked in partnership with Hallam Contracts on the scheme, which was completed in August 2007.
